WELCOME to Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council's Website

The Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council community lies 25 km (as the crow flies) from the West coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria in the South-Western region of the Cape York Peninsular, and 600 kilometres North-West of Cairns. The community is on the bank of the Magnificent Creek, which joins the South Mitchell River and in turn forms part of the Mitchell River Delta system.

2015 - THE YEAR THAT COUNCIL'S FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY IMPROVED FOR THE COMMUNITY!

Well 2014-2015 was the year that Council's financial position strengthened to a surplus of $3m which was a massive turnaround on previous years. Cash flow improved significantly too and Council ended the financial year with $7m cash in the bank. This was achieved in just under a year after being released from Ministerial imposed financial control.

2014 – The Year That Was

What a year 2014 has been from a Council perspective! At the beginning of 2014 Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council was broke. The previous CEO had left and Council had been placed under compulsory Financial Control by the Minister of Local Government.
