The Kowanyama Land & Sea Ranger crew has proudly represented their community at the Indigenous Carbon Industry Network 2024 North Australia Savanna Fire Forum on Larrakia Country (Darwin). Traditional Owner Clarita Yam, custodian of the Oriners-Sefton country, took the stage to introduce the dedicated Ranger team, comprising of Senior Ranger Darby Horace, and Rangers Taylor Edwards and Justin Dick.

This significant event serves as a gathering point for Indigenous fire practitioners, scientists, and carbon experts from across Australia and around the globe. The Kowanyama Land & Sea Rangers showcased their commitment to preserving traditional land management practices and fostering sustainable environmental practices.

During her address, Clarita Yam expressed gratitude to the ancestors who safeguarded the land for generations. She emphasised the importance of more traditional owners returning to country to continue the vital work of caring for both the land and culture.

The Ranger team shared insights into Kowanyama’s early burn program, highlighting its dual benefits of earning carbon credits for the community and providing valuable training opportunities for locals. This innovative approach not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also empowers the community through skill development.

With nearly 500 attendees, the forum provides a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among diverse stakeholders passionate about sustainable land management practices. The Kowanyama Land & Sea Ranger crew received well-deserved recognition for their dedication to preserving cultural heritage and implementing environmentally responsible practices.
