Land & Natural Resource

Since its inception in 1991, the Kowanyama Aboriginal Land and Natural Resources Management Office (KALNRMO) (the Land Office) has operated on a charter to support and facilitate Aboriginal management of the natural and cultural resources of Kowanyama land and sea country by the people of Kowanyama. The first Strategic Plan was produced in 1994 with revisions in 1999 and 2003.

The five-year strategic plan (2016-2020) is a guiding document for the people of Kowanyama to achieve ownership and management of their lands, waters and culture in their own way.

The Strategy reflects the work undertaken to date, as well as the vast array of documents relating to natural resource and cultural management held by the Land Office.

While new and existing challenges continue to drive the activities of the Land Office, this document is equally optimistic in recognising the opportunities and potentials that are present, that can be capitalised upon to create a sustainable Indigenous-governed and managed land and sea Land Office for the future.

Through community consultation and direction, KALNRMO has developed a community development agenda for the Kowanyama region, including:
